Kids Helping Kids

June 4, 2010

How many times have you heard the words, “Mommy, can I help?” or “Daddy, I want to do that too.” Kids love to help, whether it is planting flowers in the garden, baking cookies in the kitchen, or washing the car in the driveway. They are naturals when it comes to comforting their friends when they have fallen down on the playground or if they need to stay home with a bad cold or the flu. They can’t help themselves; they like to feel useful.

On Sunday, June 6, 2010, they can do just that.  From 11:00 am to 2:00 pm, the Summit Junior Fortnightly Club will hold its 32nd Tot Trot in Summit’s Memorial Field, and for the 32nd consecutive year, Lois Schneider Realtor is thrilled to be the lead sponsor.

What is a Tot Trot? It’s a day of family fun featuring games, prizes, food, face painting, moon bounces, and even a petting zoo. The Tot Trot also includes a non-competitive Fun Run for kids ages 2 through 7. Registration details can be found on the website of the Summit Junior Fortnightly Club, a women’s organization dedicated to volunteerism, fundraising, community service and outreach.

How does this day of fun translate into kids helping kids? Because the proceeds from the 2010 Tot Trot will be used to benefit Good Grief, an organization dedicated to helping children and teens cope with loss.  The mission of Good Grief  is to provide education, advocacy and peer support group programs for grieving children and teens, as well as the adults caring for them. The hope is to create communities where those coping with loss can grow up emotionally healthy. Headquartered in Summit, Good Grief currently serves close to 200 children and adults from approximately 55 different New Jersey towns.

The event will be held rain or shine, so gather your brood and head over to Summit’s Memorial Field on Sunday morning for fun, games, and the chance to allow our children to lend a  helping hand to other children in need.
